UNHCR

This document provides guidance for UNHCR staff and partners on protecting the rights of older persons in situations of forced displacement or statelessness.

When responding to the phases of forced displacement (flight, displacement, return, resettlement or integration), UNHCR staff and partners need to ensure that older persons’ rights to independence, participation, self-fulfilment, dignity, and care are met without discrimination. To do this, teams should develop a thorough understanding of both the needs and capacities of older persons in displaced populations.

Systematic application of...

Alcohol and suicide

Samaritans and Suicide Prevention Consortium

Drinking alcohol can increase someone's risk of dying by suicide. This is connected to both the impact of long-term alcohol use and the immediate effects of drinking.

Samaritans and Suicide Prevention Consortium have conducted research exploring what the relationship between alcohol and suicide looks like for people living in England, in their own words.

Key findings:

  • There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’. The best support people received acknowledged their personal circumstances and made them feel trusted and listened to. Unfortunately, many people did not receive this level of care.

Stigma among healthcare providers is a barrier to the effective delivery of mental health services in primary care. Few studies have been conducted in primary care settings comparing the attitudes of healthcare providers and experiences of people with mental illness who are service users in those facilities. Such research is necessary across diverse global settings to characterize stigma and inform effective stigma reduction.

Qualitative research was conducted on mental illness stigma in primary care settings in one low-income country (Nepal), two lower-middle income countries (India, Tunisia...

This webinar looked at the reasons why the integration of AOD and mental health sectors has failed and outlines possible alternatives.
