The Ministry of Health of Senegal and UNODC mark World Mental Health Day

This year, World Mental Health Day was celebrated across the world on October 10th, 2020. It comes at a time when billions of people around the globe have been affected by the COVID 19 pandemic which has had unmeasurable negative effects on mental health. This is why, WHO, together with its partner organizations has called for a major increase in investment geared towards mental health through its campaign: “Move for mental health: Let’s Invest”.

ISSUP Kenya PCEA UTC Graduation

ISSUP Kenya in partnership with the PCEA graduated the first cohort of trainees on basic UTC course: a total of 30 participants. The ceremony at the Kikuyu mission hospital was graced by the Governor of Kiambu County, His Excellency James Nyoro, In coming SG of the PCEA, Rev. Dr. Waihenya,The CEO Kikuyu hospital Dr. P.Kimpiatu. Other officials present included Rev. Dr. W. Kogo, ISSUP Kenya Executive Dr. Richard Gakunju & Vice president ISSUP Kenya Ms. Susan Gitau. According to the WHO, harmful alcohol use is one of the leading risk factors for the global burden of disease.

In response to concerning trends, governments around the world have intervened in the market for alcohol by levying specific taxes.  

In 2008, the government of Botswana imposed a 30% tax levy on all alcohol products to deal with problematic drinking in the country. The levy was initially set at 70% but was reduced to 30%.

Research into the effectiveness of these measures typically focusses on alcohol sales and self-reported levels of consumption. However, an area less understood...

The Sale of Alcohol in South Africa During the Coronavirus (Covid-19) Pandemic

On the 12th of July, in a bid to reduce the volume of trauma patients so hospitals have more beds open to treat COVID-19 patients, President Cyril Ramaphosa reintroduced the alcohol ban.

South Africa originally introduced a ban on all alcohol sales on 27 March. However, as lockdown restrictions were reviewed the ban was lifted.

According to President Cyril Ramaphosa, however, since the sale and distribution of alcohol was reintroduced in June, hospitals have experienced a spike in admissions in their trauma and emergency wards.
