The establishment of the ISSUP Indonesia National Chapter was inspired by the global vision of strengthening the addiction workforce through collaboration, professional development, and evidence-informed practice, as promoted during the ISSUP Global Meeting held in Vienna, Austria, in June 2019.
Inspired by this shared vision, the Kasih Mulya Foundation (KMF) took the initiative to engage government institutions, professional associations, academic institutions, and civil society organisations in exploring the establishment of an ISSUP National Chapter in Indonesia. These discussions built upon years of collaboration among stakeholders committed to addressing substance use and addiction through prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and recovery services.
While many organisations had already made significant contributions in their respective fields, their efforts were often implemented independently, reflecting different institutional priorities and mandates. Stakeholders recognised that greater coordination would enhance knowledge sharing, strengthen professional capacity, and improve the overall quality and consistency of addiction services across the country.
In October 2019, representatives from government agencies and non-governmental organisations convened at the National Narcotics Board (BNN) Headquarters in Jakarta to discuss the future of addiction workforce development in Indonesia. During this meeting, participants reached a shared agreement to establish the ISSUP Indonesia National Chapter under the auspices of ISSUP Global. The National Chapter was envisioned as an inclusive platform that would connect professionals and organisations under a common commitment to advancing evidence-informed prevention, treatment, recovery, and workforce development.
Since its establishment, ISSUP Indonesia has served as a national platform for collaboration, bringing together professionals from diverse disciplines to strengthen competency development, promote evidence-informed practice, and facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience. Through professional education, capacity-building initiatives, strategic partnerships, and international collaboration, the National Chapter continues to contribute to the development of a skilled and connected addiction workforce in Indonesia.
Today, ISSUP Indonesia remains committed to supporting the global mission of ISSUP by fostering collaboration across sectors, strengthening professional standards, and promoting sustainable approaches to prevention, treatment, and recovery that improve health and social outcomes for individuals, families, and communities.
