Subject: Concern Over the Non–Evidence-Based Decision to Conduct Nationwide Drug Testing Among Students
As a concerned Addiction Practitioner specialized in School and Environment-Based Prevention, I wish to express my deep concern over the recent decision by the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency-Ldea to conduct nationwide drug testing among students in Liberia.
This move is not evidence-based and raises serious questions about its practicality and long-term impact. If thousands of students are found positive, what will the government do next? Currently, even the identified users across the country are not receiving adequate treatment due to the limited number of treatment and rehabilitation centers available in Liberia.
We, the Addiction Professionals, have consistently emphasized the need for a coordinated, professional, and evidence-driven approach in the fight against substance abuse. Testing without adequate follow-up treatment, counseling, and preventive systems will only result in unnecessary spending without measurable outcomes.
Instead of reactionary measures, we urge the government and stakeholders to involve qualified Addiction Professionals in designing and implementing strategies that focus on prevention, education, treatment, and community rehabilitation.
Together, we can strengthen Liberia’s response to substance abuse through professional collaboration and evidence-based action.
