Dr. Sean Leonardo Knowles is a former physician at the Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre in Nassau, Bahamas, where he worked for ten years, and is a certified gambling addiction specialist. He has also been the Co-Chief Executive Officer and Chief Physician at E-Man-U-Well Medical Center since February 2020, where he practises general medicine, including the treatment of mental health disorders. In July 2023, Dr. Knowles began working as the Psychiatric Medical Officer at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services, The Bahamas' prison system, overseeing the mental health of juvenile and adult inmates, as well as staff members. He is also a Reserve Senior Lieutenant and Acting Force Medical Officer at the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, The Bahamas' military. He received the Reserve Entry No. 2 Best Male Recruit Award in April 2024 and the Most Outstanding Commission Reserve Officer Award in July 2024. In September 2025, he was officially installed as ISSUP Bahamas' Assistant Director for Nassau for a three-year term. He also serves as a board member of the Bahamas Diabetes Association.
Dr. Knowles earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology, with minors in Chemistry and Spanish, from Saint John's University in Minnesota, USA, in 1998, graduating cum laude with All-College Honors and a Distinction in Biology. He obtained a Master of Science in Mathematics and Statistics from Youngstown State University in Ohio, USA, in 2005 and was awarded the Most Outstanding Graduate Student Award in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics. In 2013, he obtained his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of the West Indies in Jamaica, where he received the Dr. Mortimer Moxey Most Outstanding Performance in Community Medicine Award. He was also the recipient of a 2016 British Chevening Scholarship and completed a Master of Science in Immunology of Infectious Diseases at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine in London, England, in 2017. Dr. Knowles also received The Bahamas' 2023 Rotary Foundation Humanitarian Award for his extensive work in mental health awareness, education, treatment, and prevention.
Dr. Knowles enjoys weightlifting, kickboxing, travelling, watching thriller movies, socialising, mentoring young men, and public speaking. He has presented on various topics related to mental health and physical conditions at numerous forums, both nationally and internationally. He is married to the former Doretha Strachan, and the couple has one daughter, Leylah. Dr. Knowles is also an avid dog lover and is "a dad" to Winnie, a Belgian Malinois; Molly, a Boxer mix; and Meg, a mixed breed.
