PREVENTION THROUGH MENTAL HEALTH FOR SPORTS

Supporting mental health initiatives for sportspeople is a great way to encourage substance use prevention, as it brings significant benefits to sportspeople both on and off the field. As a former international soccer/football player for Kenya, I bring fast-hand experience to the field of addiction, knowing the challenges sportspeople are bound to face, hence leading them to substance abuse as a coping mechanism for different reasons, such as injuries and unmet expectations.
By encouraging the non-use of substances and discouraging abuse, athletes can maintain peak physical and mental performance. Substance misuse often leads to decreased focus, slower recovery times, and impaired judgment, all of which can negatively impact performance and career longevity. Promoting healthier coping mechanisms instead allows athletes to manage stress, pressure, and injuries more effectively while safeguarding their long-term well-being. This not only enhances athletic achievement but also fosters resilience and consistency in performance.
Beyond individual performance, mental health initiatives contribute to creating a healthier sporting culture. When athletes are supported in prioritizing their mental well-being and avoiding harmful substances, it sets a powerful example for teammates, fans, and younger generations. It reduces stigma around seeking help, encourages open conversations, and promotes a culture of holistic care rather than one solely focused on physical strength. In turn, this helps protect athletes from burnout, addiction, and long-term health problems while strengthening the overall integrity and reputation of sports.
