How Do Stimulant Users Perceive Available Drug Demand Reduction Interventions in Croatia?

BACKGROUND:

This study represents the first qualitative research on stimulant use in the Republic of Croatia, offering valuable insights into the perspectives of hard-to-reach stimulant users. The aim is to better understand the needs of this population, thereby supporting the development of more effective and targeted interventions.

METHODS:

The study involved a heterogeneous sample of 24 adults who had used at least one stimulant drug (MDMA/ecstasy, amphetamine, methamphetamine, cocaine, or synthetic cathinones) within the past 12 months. The sample comprised 13 men and 11 women, with an average age of 39.6 years (ranging from 21 to 55 years). Participants were recruited through harm reduction programs, social networks, and snowball sampling to ensure a diversity of experiences. The sample represented individuals from various socioeconomic backgrounds, with different levels of drug use intensity and a range of consumption settings. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and a focus group and analysed using thematic analysis.

RESULTS:

Many participants expressed distrust in the public health system, citing the unavailability of psychological support as a primary reason for not seeking formal treatment. Suggestions for improving the safety and quality of care for stimulant users included implementing anonymous and free drugchecking services, increasing the accessibility of drop-in centres, and providing self-service vending machines stocked with sterile injection equipment.

CONCLUSION:

This research provided stimulant users with the opportunity to actively contribute to the understanding of their needs and to influence the development of public policies.
