Dual Disorders in Patients at the Department of Addictology
BACKGROUND:
People with addictive behaviour and co-occurring mental illness represent a particularly vulnerable group whose treatment is often complicated. While the prevalence of these patients is high, the lack of research into this area in the Czech Republic limits the development of effective treatment plans.
AIMS:
The study aims to identify the prevalence of dual disorders in patients of the Department of Addictology of the General University Hospital in Prague and examine the relationship between age, gender, treatment duration, the frequency of visits, and the hospitalisation length on the one hand and the presence of a comorbid disorder on the other hand. Another objective is to determine whether any of these factors may be associated with the higher probability of multiple comorbidities.
SAMPLE:
The sample comprises the Department of Addictology patients aged over 18 who sought treatment from 2018 to 2024 and underwent psychiatric assessment.
METHODS:
We will be using records of the FONS health information system, which will make our research quicker and more effective thanks to the availability of an extensive clinical sample. This will save time and costs that the collection of new data would require. In addition, these records provide a realistic picture of clinical practice. The data will be anonymised and analysed using descriptive statistics, correlations, and linear regression.
DISCUSSION:
This research will help to fill the gap in the knowledge of this patient group. A prevalence cross-sectional study will be conducted in 2025. More thorough analysis and a publication will be prepared for 2026.
