Seoul Council’s Drug Prevention Committee Calls for Structural Reform in Education

On January 16, the Seoul Metropolitan Council’s Special Committee on Drug Prevention Education held its third meeting, chaired by Councilor Lee Jong-bae.

The session brought together council members, education officials, and experts including Professor Kim Nami (Sahmyook University) and Professor Cho Hyun-Seob, in cooperation with the ICAN Headquarters.

The discussion emphasized that current drug prevention education is limited and often ineffective. Experts called for a structural transformation: moving beyond one-time lectures to sustainable, realistic programs that involve both families and schools.

Councilor Lee Jong-bae stressed that prevention efforts must focus on changing youth perceptions and behaviors, not just increasing the number of sessions.

The committee highlighted the importance of cooperation between government, academia, and communities to build a stronger prevention framework.
